Flavanols and Anthocyanins in Cardiovascular Health:

چکیده
Nowadays it is accepted that natural flavonoids present in fruits and plantderived-foods are relevant, not only for technological reasons and organoleptic properties, but also because of their potential health-promoting effects, as suggested by the available experimental and epidemiological evidence. The beneficial biological effects of these food bioactives may be driven by two of their characteristic properties: their affinity for proteins and their antioxidant activity. Over the last 15 years, numerous publications have demonstrated that besides their in vitro antioxidant capacity, certain phenolic compounds, such as anthocyanins, catechins, proanthocyanidins, and other non coloured flavonoids, may regulate different signaling pathways involved in cell survival, growth and differentiation. In this review we will update the knowledge on the cardiovascular effects of anthocyanins, catechins and proanthocyanidins, as implied by the in vitro and clinical studies on these compounds. We also review the available information on the structure, distribution and bioavailability of flavanols (monomeric catechins and proanthocyanidins) and anthocyanins, data necessary in order to understand their role in reducing risk factors and preventing cardiovascular health problems through different aspects of their bioefficacy on vascular parameters (platelet agregation, atherosclerosis, blood pressure, antioxidant status, inflammation-related markers, etc.), myocardial conditions, and wholebody metabolism (serum biochemistry, lipid profile), highlighting the need for betterOPEN ACCESS Int. متن کاملBlueberries – A Phytonutrient superstar
Blueberries are a nutrient rich fruit containing antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds particularly anthocyanins, proanthocyanins, flavanols and tannins that are reported to be effective in reducing cholesterol and other blood lips, thereby reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease. Blueberry consumption is also associated with reducing the growth of some types of cancers, alleviating...
متن کاملBiological Activities of Polyphenols from Grapes
The dietary consumption of grape and its products is associated with a lower incidence of degenerative diseases such as cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancers. Most recent interest has focused on the bioactive phenolic compounds in grape. Anthocyanins, flavanols, flavonols and resveratrol are the most important grape polyphenols because they possess many biological activities, such...
متن کاملA Review of the Effect of Winemaking Techniques on Phenolic Extraction in Red Wines
Am. J. Enol. Vitic. 56:3 (2005) 197 Phenolic compounds are important to red wine quality because they impact color, mouthfeel, and ageability. Although phenolics are present in grape juice, the amount is greatly increased in wine because of their greater solubility in ethanol than in purely aqueous solutions. Typical levels of the major grape phenolics present in red wine are shown in Table 1. ...
متن کاملScavenging Capacities of Some Wines and Wine Phenolic Extracts
The aim of this study was to assess the ability of different wines – a sweet red, a dry red, a sweet white, and a dry white – to scavenge the stable 1,1’-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl radical (DPPH.) and to determine their phenolic composition. Both red wines contained, apart from anthocyanins, also higher concentration of total phenolics, tartaric esters, and flavonols than the two white wines. A...
